Beauty

I love portrait shots. I love capturing the uniqueness of/in people. I really do not like retouching head shots when I take them. Why should I? I only end up loosing the characteristics of the person. Probably end up being left with a barbie type image.
This picture was taken about 23:00hrs last year on HMS something (forget the name) berthed on the River Thames.
Why have I titled this portrait "Beauty?" First of all ask ourselves, "what is beauty?" I look at this picture and it strikes me as a beautiful picture showing the true face of the subject stripped away of all. It strikes me as a very direct & honest face. I want to know what her story is, where she has been, what life has thrown her up to this point.
Now that for me, is the power of photography. These however are my thoughts.
I need inputs from you my learned viewers. Please do not just visit this site without your comments, leave your views & thoughts about the image, about my own thoughts above. Do you agree, disagree, think I'm loopy?
I need to know.

Ok, ok... you're really making good use of the new WYSIWYG editor wink I'll bite.

Nice shot, but I see a care worn face and not so much about the "beauty". In fact, see looks a bit annoyed.

Technical: Good positioning of the subject to the left. In the center would have been a bit too boring. The tilt of the head also adds some interest to the scene. I like the black background, it's very good at ensuring no distractions enter the shot. Forehead is a bit bright. Was it because of the flash?

The Maven,

Yes it was cause of the dreaded flash. Did not have my omni bounce with me. I am a daylight outdoor loving photographer smile Thanks for the comments.

You could have removed the flash effect when you processed this shot you know.

Did you use the camera flash as opposed to speedlite?

Good work.

Jide,

I used a 420 EX flash. Yup the flash got me on the image.

Does anyone use the inbuilt camera flash? I would have thought that was a mortal sin for any photographer smile

I had the 420EX as well (actually I still have it) - at the time I bought it, the 580EX had just been announced but was not available in the UK. But recently, Jide convinced me to get a 580EX.

And yes, the 580EX is quite an improvement. More evenly distributed lighting and much better control over the output. It's well worth the upgrade. Also, your 420EX doesn't go to waste. It can still be triggered as a slave.
The built-in flash is cool, Canon screwed up by leaving it off of the 5D. It's too convenient. I will get a 430EX one day.
