See  policyofsubster

Hello folks, please accept our apologies for our tardiness in responding to comments, Sinem has been so busy (end of term so she having to write up reports and all for her students as well as juggling a Phd at the same time) and Suby has been slaving in front of the PC, phone and everywhere trying to start up a business.

One of the things I have been concentrating on these past few weeks is not only how I take pictures but how I edit them and what the end result looks like. My aim is to be a world renowned fashion photographer but not an easy industry to break into, I have been getting very very good feedbacks on my images from agencies and it seems some people can't believe I work with a 20D, I just think that weird. Anyways, I look at that as a good thing. LOL

Hopefully will be upgrading to new equipements in the next few weeks, until then, I slave and try to produce the best magazine quality images from my trusty ole 20D. Please do have a look at the original image Here ,  I think this shot has come a long way from what the original looked like.

Should be collaborating with a well established Photographer soon, looking forward to the learning experience.

Anyone looking for the services of Suby as a Photographer, you know what to do..... (email me in case some are wondering what. LOL)

I see what you mean, the original does not have an edge to it but this one does, but it goes a long way back to our original conversation of edit or shoot, camera or photoshop ? Please don't get me wrong bruv, I like this over the original but that's why mgazines have such depts. with photoshop guru's. You want to make money and get established which I can understand but what are you asking of us. We know you're a master at photoshop as well as a photog but when you're trying to make money and keep your workflow in hand you can't do both.

I love your work bruv, looks like you got to make a desicion, art or money.
Suby & Sinem: Easy question bruv, smile I always knew what I wanted to get out of photography, even before I decided I wanted to go the route of making it into a profession. Yes I would love to get it right on the camera, but I have never said I was a purist or an artist. I like how I can ENHANCE my images via Photoshop, don't get me wrong, I do not edit all my images, just the ones I post up here, Usually all I do is quick colour correction and thats it.

Why did I decide to post the original, I do get request from people all the time to have a look at what the original looked like, so here. Yes I do want to make loads of money from this as of 3 months ago, this pays the mortgage, and my aim is to break into the fashion industry and this blog enables me to learn all the tricks of the trade and post up for the world to tell me if I got it right or wrong. I don't think I am a photoshop guru, I just think I am a guy who puts a lot of effort into achiveing what he thinks is the best of his images.

So it's not a question or art or money, I consider what I do an art (photography and the ability to edit/enhance my images whatever way I want. So I guess I am going the route of art & money, but I don't claim to be an artist, just someone who works hard at his profession smile

Suby
ha, I think johnnyg has opened a polemic topic here... I don't want to invade you guys' phlog with a huge discussion on the matter, but I have wondered myself many times about the credit given to a person who can choose the right settings in a camara to get a great picture, and the one given to somebody who points and shoots and then chooses the right features in a post-production software to change the image. How big is the difference between one talent and the other? I have much more to say, but for now I'll just mention that I like both pictures, how blunt and realistic the "before" is, and how sharp and edgy the "after" turned out.
Suby & Sinem: Hey feel free to say more, always invite debate smile

Have a look at my response to JonnyG above. When I take my pictures, I ensure working with the equipements and natural enviroiments I get the best image possible from the camera, When I started taking photogrphy serious, I did not know anything about Photoshop so was forced to learn how to produce the best image straight from the camera, however, when I decided to take photography serious and I started chatting with Pro photographers and I started seeing the things they did to enhance their images, I was blown away, and then I realised I could not do any of the things they did, I also once went into a dark room with a film photographer only to be shown that all that is being done in Photoshop can all be done by choosing the right film and using the right chemicals in there. So what did that make them?

Now for what I want to achieve, a profession in the photography world, is the original good enough to be placed in Vogue, Elle or those magazines I hope oneday I will shot for? Hell no, So what happens if I get a client who wants me to clone something out of a shot or God forbid, slim down a model, do I say "sorry mate, me a purist, me not do that, I am an Artist after all"...

I have but a Canon 20D, now those photographers who mostly shoot for magazines use cameras and lenses that are worth £30 to £40k, the Hassleblads and the Mamiya that I feel no editing whatsoever is needed when snapping with cameras like these, but hey, you wrong, these images from such cameras get edited/retouched as well, so what luck does little Suby with his poxy little camera stand if I do not learn how to play with the BIG BOYS?

The processed one looks more lifelike to me, but maybe I have been conditioned by all those fashion magazines I don't read. smile
Suby & Sinem: Yep, you have been conditioned to like glossy image of perfect models with perfect skins, yeah right as if thats they way it all is smile Well I just try to emulate them smile Thanks for the comment

The question is not art or money, but how will i make money out of my art. Am i arty enough to make money out of it.

There are photo's and images. Photo is what comes from the camera and may be touched the same as in the old days with film. Image is the edited thing, wholly photoshopped. Some bloggers belong to Photographic Societies and would know exactly what the difference is. When the society have competitions the normally have two broad categories - photos and edited images. Nowadays they have the software to know what you have done with the original.

In the film days there were a miriad of tricks you could do to obtain effects. Many different types of lenses and filters, types of film and types of cameras. The real professional would know how to combine all these to arrive at a photo on the film - this could still be touched up in the development laboratory. And it all counted as photos. A standard type editing program like Picasa more or less embodies what you could do in the film days.

What the Society expects is that you will be honest about your competition entry - don't try to pass something with layering, curves and such off as a photo. They will pick it up and deal with it.

The athlete at school shines in the pool which is the school, then goes on to college and becomes an also ran in the bigger pool. The same for every talent - i can write good english, but not a novel and definitely not poetry. We all put up photos here and try to gauge the room for improvement from the comments we get - as you would know to step up and get some pictures sold and the highest step is to make a living out of it. Competition is sharp and you have to do what you have to do in an honest way to get acceptance.

Like i said before photos and images each has a place in society. So there can be no real debate about it "one is better than the other" - the only rule is that one should not try to pass an image off as a photo.

Sometimes i play around with a photo in photoshop to explore what you can do with the software - my wife will just take one look at it and say that she hasn't been at the place i have created and walk away. smile

Oh yes and welcome back Suby - will miss you Sin
Suby & Sinem: Well said Louis, well said, I could not have said it any better (REALY :d)

To tell the truth, for me it's make money from photography or starve, so I'll rather make the money by usung some retouching or editing on my pics (which I love doing) or ..... (don't want to contemplate the alternative)

However, please people who would love to put money in my pocket with images that have not been edited, please I do sell them as well, please please please, feel free to get in touch smile

Ths Sub is back!! I can see what you've done here (surprise, surprise) and I've read the other posts and response and yep you're right, the most beautiful pple we see in those mags have all been made to look more so - Halle Berry, Alicia Keys,Beyonce etc. etc, You look at the orinal pics and it does not look to far off wht the orinal looked like here. You look at the finnished product and spots are gone, hair tidied, a bit of shape added to hips and legs...it goes on. So Bro you do what you gats to do! I'm feeling your work and it does look pro. will talk later
Suby & Sinem: Maybe for a few days then passing the reigns back to Sinem smile

Thanks Bro, call anytime, you know where I am smile

Nice portrait - but the eyes and the highlight on the edge of her left cheek worry me just a bit; they seem just a fraction too forced in the processing. But that's just a personal opinion. Good professional quality work; I hope you make it to where you want to be as a professional.
Suby & Sinem: Thanks Nick, did not try to force the highlights on the cheek, was quite a dark evening when shooting this shot, placed the speedlight to the right of the model, I thought I actually toned down the harshness, will have a look at image again grin

Suby
No need for any debate; you're a professional. You're in business to put bread on the table. You provide what the client wants, not what Suby wants. You use the tools at your disposal to provide them. Camera, Photoshop, even another photgrapher if necessary.

I don't much like this image. It's scruffy, untidy and too dark and not particularly well composed. Perhaps I'm in a bad mood. Haven't had coffee yet and I've been up four hours!
Suby & Sinem: Thanks Colin, yup, what the client wants, The client gets, End of story, all the models I work with, they all seem to love the edited versions, me wonder why? smile
Yep Colin needs to go have some coffeee grin

P.s
You seem to forget, me like dark
Hi Subster, welcome back. First off, I would just like to tell you that after I read your comments on my posting this morning, I was really choked up and filled with unadulterated pride. Thankyou so very, very much.

Now to your work. Having viewed the original, I found it to be quite flat and lacking punch, this one is a vast improvement and is a really excellent example of what people want to see. If there is one small thing in this one, that is not quite right, it is the model's hands. They appear a bit washed out and blurry, sort of out of synch with the rest of the photograph.

The debate on original/edited will rage for a very long time to come, but ultimately, as a pro, you have to give the clients what they want, end of story.

As you know, I do very little editing on my photos at the moment, but then again, I am not doing this for a living (at the moment), I am trying to get an honest assessment of my photography from all of the people on Shutter, but I will PP if the original does require it, as I am sure the vast majority of the bloggers here do.

Is the use of editing tools cheating? I think not. In the old days, engineers and scientists used slide rules for complex calculations, then pocket/scientific calculators, progressing to computers, so therefore, it is, I feel, merely a case of using the tools of the day to the best effect one can.
Let us not forget, one can put a monkey behind the best and most expensive camera in the world and he will still produce garbage. Photography to a large extent is about vision, the ability to see an image and reproduce it to the best of one's ability and I feel that you, mosty of the time, well and truly achieve this.

Many, many kind regards, Neil.
Suby & Sinem: Me just back for a day or 2 and reign goes back to Sinem, she needs to either go out and take more pictures or edit some of the ones she already taken smile

Used f2.8 on this shot, was a dark and dreary evening, had but one speedlite, yep the hands I could have sworn I had put it in context of the shot, oh well, maybe it needs some more TLC... or maybe not grin

Wow Suby!! I am still amazed at what can be done in post processing. I have to say, it must be hard not to overdo, but you usually don't have that problem. Nice work.
Suby & Sinem: Well there are some people who make a living from overdoing the PP, it is after all an art form, but for me, the art of photography still interest me, learning how to perfectly enhance the shot is my aim, knowing when to say enough is definitely hard, but one day I will only post out suberbly taken and adequately PPed shots, till the the grind continues grin

Suby i quite like the pose here and i think my eye would like to see the whole eye on the right but i know sometimes these things aren't always possible. Not sure if you were using a reflector but the only other thing that draws my eye is the shadow under the chin and that could have perhaps been reduced by one close on the left. i probably would be reluctant to say that to other pros but we all have seen your work mature and change. good work.
Suby & Sinem: Reflector? Whats that, it's poor wannabe photographer Suby here remember LOL, I used a of camera speedlight to light up the shot, hence the shadows, not to worry, ordered some new equipement for the New Yerar, sono more excuses will be tendered smile

Suby great equipment is not the key. Rolando Gomez is a renowned photographer, in many ways living the dream you have. You can read about him here: http://www.rolandogomez.com/default.asp

Here is a cover shot he did of a Playboy model for the cover of Rangefinder magazine using the Olympus E-300 (incidentally my first digital camera). http://www.rolandogomez.com/portfolio/?catid=1

Bobby Goodrich: http://www.bobbiegoodrich.com/ World famous for her wild horses, shoots with a 20D. Here is an article about her in Rangefinder http://www.rangefindermag.com/magazine/oct06/showpage.taf?page=8
She used the 20D for these shots.

In other words don't sell your equipment short since many world famous widely published photographers have used the same or lesser equipment on their most famous works.
Suby & Sinem: Thanks Laurie, I actually have come accross Rolando in my travels and think he shoots some awesome shots, as for Boby, her images are amazing, but she does do a aweful lot of PPing to her images, I don't think I am that good yet, her PP work is awesome. She does use a lot of G blur but most of all I love the tones and colours of her shot, have to learn to reproduce what she is doing smile

Suby
I like what you've done with this image .I personally have no problem with touching up or tweaking pics. I need to work on those skills.

Come February I will be taking a class in Photoshop called Digital Darkroom taught by a published social documentary photog. If photoshop is acceptable in the circle of narrative photography there should be little or no discussion about using it on personal or commercial pics.

To each their own!
Suby & Sinem: Thanks Josie, however, I think instead of going for a class in photoshop without you knowing the basics is a waste of time, best thing, buy The Photoshop CS2 Book for digital Photographers by Scott Kelby, most important £30.00 I ever spent. That book is a heaven sent even till today.

I forgot about the photo...I got focused on your comment about your equipment.

The photo is nice although there is a definite white sort of pixelated line going down from just under her eye along the right side of her face to her chin which is quite distracting to me and likely from the pping. The hands being blurry don't seem to fit. Otherwise the skin tones are nice. I think her eyeliner and or mascara is too heavy under her eyes though.
Suby & Sinem: Men I got to get me the same screen you have, looked it this image on my 3 screens and still cannot see the line smile Had to stop down to f2.8 cause of the lighting conditions smile

Sorry I meant that the white line is on the left side of her face, the right side of the photo.
Suby & Sinem: Aahhhh, thought I was going mad there smile I see what you mean, wanted the face to sort of pop out of the image, maybe I'll tone it down smile

Phew, thought me monitors wereon their last legs already
sho has definitely come a long way (yes, i saw the original and i feel guilty)....best of luck man, u know ur gonna be huge...
Suby & Sinem: Thanks bro, always nice to hear someone aprt from myself say that, it makes me almost believe it smile

Suby
Certainly, I like plus this one last Suby. Their characteristics are more marked and I like plus the result
Suby & Sinem: Thanks a lot for the comments Jose, I am glad you like the image.

I like the moody processing on this one Subster. I've just had a look at the initial image and to be honest, there is nothing wrong with it, just a little contrast maybe. But you have injected a vibrancy to this and a real wow punchy feel. Love it. Mal
Suby & Sinem: I agree with you tyhat the original image is quite good (ofcourse me going to say that LOL), but seriously, I like being able to add that added edge to my images, truth be told, with the advent of the prosumer, every one is a photographer, one of the ways I want to be able to differentiate myself from most is with the quality and uniqueness of my images, taking these images a few extra steps further helps I think smile

Make up is bad. I mean the eyebrow things, looking dirty. Shining below eye could be little bit softer. Composition is good.
Suby & Sinem: Thanks Bro, when it comes to make-up me know nothing, hopefully from next year I will be working with the same make0-up artist on all my shoots shot things shoud get better

Mery Christmas & a Happy new year in advance smile

I like the pose and the look. Such confidence in the model with a hint of something secretive.
